Keyword Research FAQs

Need some short answer on keyword research for SEO? Check out some FAQs here.

Keyword research is the process of discovering what people are searching for online and how they are searching for it.

The search phrases you discover are then used to inform on-page content and the ads you serve.

Long tail keyword research is the process of discovering lengthy search phrases that still incorporate a top level keyword.

For example: If your top level keyword is “football boots”, then a long tail keyword would be something like: “What are the best football boots for men?”.

This is valuable as there is less ranking competition. The intent is also different, meaning your content needs to answer the long tail intent too.

The first step of starting the keyword research process is to simply compile lists of terms related to your core topic.

From there you will then trim and refine your list.

Keyword research is important for SEO because it directly informs the style, length and even medium of content needed on a webpage.

It also informs the intent your content needs to match. For example: Is the keyword informational, transactional, locational?

Your content needs to answer the intent of the keyword. This intent may be best served by a list form article, or it may be a video. Keyword research uncovers this information.

The best solution for this is to just brainstorm.

Use the autosuggest function on Google and YouTube.

Search for your topic on popular forums such as Reddit and Quora.

This will help you discover what people are searching for and any common sub topics.

Competitor keyword research is tricky without utilising a paid tool such as SEMrush.

With paid SEO tools you can simply plug in any domain and you’ll be given a list of all ranking terms.

To research competitor keywords for free, the best method is to use a site:search “keyword” in Google.

Example: site:nike.com “football boots” – this will return all results from nike.com that include “football boots”.
